Troop 9 Thomas E. Mullendore Year Round Camper Award
Troop 9 has always had a very active program with monthly activities all year long. With such an active program, not everyone could participate in all of the activities. In 2003 Troop 9 Eagle Scout Maciej Zurawski, proposed that to recognize those few individuals that have made that year long commitment, we should honor them with a special award.
To earn the this award, a scout or scouter must participate in Troop 9 activities for twelve consecutive months running. They must show up on time to help load and then be there to unload. They must participate in the full event. The only exception is if a Scout is participating in a conflicting Scouting event like a summer camp staff, a National or World Jamboree, Fire Crafter or an OA ritual.
The Troop 9 Thomas E. Mullendore Year Round Camper award was created as a memorial to long time Troop 9 Assistant Scoutmaster and Eagle Scout Thomas E. Mullendore (1926-1996).
He was known by hundreds of Ransburg Campers by the name of Papa Smurf. When they would ask why he is called Papa Smurf, he would wink and say "because my skin is blue!"
He claimed that in 1993 he was camping more than he was home. So it seems that this award is an appropriate memorial. It also honors the spirit and commitment of Troop 9's outdoor program.
